I Try

I try to shine but, others take my spot away.I try to do what i want to do but, others restrict my life.
I try to make my own choices but, others think I should depend on someone else.
I try to be less shy but, other try to intimidate me.

They are the people that try to take credit from my work.
Today I'm going to stop to do what others expect from me to do,
And be who I want to me because nobody can’t judge me.

The book Kindred is about 26 years old African American woman name Dana, who lives in the year 1976. On Dana’s 26 birthdays she has travel back in time to the year 1815, where Dana meets Rufus for the first time, as a boy, while he was drowning in a river. Every time Dana would go back to her time days, moths, even years would pass in Rufus’s time. There was time when Dana had to stay in Rufus time longer and found out that slavery would be oppressive. During this Dana learns that slaves would have to resist to the restriction slavery created for them. 0ctabia Butler’s main message is that when you restrict people, they resist in violent ways.

Slaves were always restricted from what they wanted to do. 0ne example would be how Rufus would try to restrict Dana from being with Kevin. Kevin is Dana’s husband, and while Kevin was at his own time 1976, Dana was trap in the 1800s. Dana knew that Rufus wouldn’t want her to get hurt because, when Dana’s life would be in danger she would go back to her own time. It came to a point where Dana couldn’t stand the treatment she was put in, so she decided to” in the warm water“ cut her wrist, hoping that she would be send back home , to see her love Kevin. What this reveals is that Dana couldn’t stand being trap in a time that was not hers so she decided to cut herself so she could be send back to her own time that way she could escape from being in a place where she was being restricted to do what she wanted to do.

Another example of how people in the book would resist to slavery would be killing you. Alice was that example she was one of many slaves that Rufus own in that time. Rufus liked Alice didn’t matter if she was white or black. Alice would mostly always do what Rufus would tell her to do hoping he would give her what she wanted her freedom. Alice got pregnant two times from Rufus. After baby Hagar was born Alice had tried to run away. Dana at that time she was at e own time 1976. Alice was capture and Rufus tried to give her a lesson by restricting her from seeing her children and selling them. Alice couldn’t resist from not seeing her children so she hung herself. Then Dana had come back Rufus told her everything that happen, had never sold Alice’s children he just wanted to show her a lesson to never miss with him. “Hanging by the neck. “Page 248. This small quote shows that for resisting everything that Rufus put in her way she ended up killing herself.

After Alice death Dana had stayed with Rufus while Dana being Rufus, Rufus started to tell her that what he felt for Alice was real. Rufus had always thought that Dana and Alice looked alike. Dana felt uncomfortable, so she went to the attic were she had all her stuff. Rufus follow her, and restricted her from having a choice to have a sex or not have sex, Dana resisted that and she got her knives and stabbed Rufus and he died. “I could accept him as my ancestor, mu younger brother, my friend, but not as my master, and not as my lover.” From this you can see that Dana was that type of person that wants going to let no one restrict her life like Rufus did to Alice.

From this you can see that when people tried to restrict people from doing what they want, they might respond in a violence way. What should happen now is that every person should have the right to do what they want to do. My advice to you is that if you are going to restrict someone from doing what they want do it only if you know that what they want to do is bad in their lives. Do not do it for your own personal use. From these examples I ask to not restrict others from living their own lives. Is like a bird when they are small they need protection but when they are older they have to spread their wings and fly away. “To silence criticism is to silence freedom.” Sidney Hook
